I volunteer at a university lab school and am privileged to work with children, infant through ten-year-olds. Having spent many years in public schools in Texas I am very familiar with the sights and sounds of “school life.” Sometimes they are chaotic and frantic, but never are they boring. Young children and schools are a constant in my professional life and as such provide much comfort.
When we're comfortable with a situation we often don't give it much thought; it's always there, it's always the same. With this in mind I often incorporate children's creations to help my college students see how they can take something from the children's world of school and make it musical.
