    Because music is used in various cultures over broad geographic areas as well as over time, it is believed that music is universal and a tool for communication. That music is universal does not mean that music is used and interpreted the same across cultures, but that it is social and communicative. The focus, then, of Ilari’s article is a review of several research studies regarding children, their interactions with music, and their social development. It is a very interesting, and extensive, overview of the research that has been done to define and delineate children’s social and cultural development, and how music experiences—musicking and musical play—might impact those developments.
