  • Book Review: Introducing Children to the Orchestra

    There are many books on the market that introduce young children to the instruments of the orchestra. This review covers four of those books and represents different “takes” or approaches to the topic.

    The first book, entitled, The Story of the Incredible Orchestra: An Introduction to Musical Instruments and the Symphony Orchestra is written and illustrated by Bruce Koscielniak, who also is a musician. Koscielniak uses colorful pen and watercolor illustrations to accompany his text. The book not only explains and pictures the instruments of the modern orchestra, but also presents the history of instruments and instrumental ensembles. He provides a glimpse of the life and times of instrumental musicians and how the orchestra developed over the centuries.
