Summary of October 26, 2014 workshop:

Summary of Fall Workshop: The Arizona Chapter of ECMMA offered a fall workshop, “Make Music: Practical Tools to Enrich Your Classroom”, which was needful help to preschool teachers, school administrators, music and movement teachers, and caretakers. In the opening session, “Why Music,” Lyn Codier cited recent research, describing why music is so important, particularly for young children. Kathy Rowe went on to describe how music and movement help children learn. Susan Yuen addressed the caretaker’s role in enriching babies’ lives through music. Amber Hale explained how difficult change is for children and how music in the classroom can help them disengage from the current activity and reengage with what is coming next, using music can create smooth transitions and reduce frustrations. Christine Ockenfels gave us a better understanding of children with special needs and encouraged us to give more and expect more from them musically. These children will delight you with their musical expressions and it is wonderful to see how music changes their lives. Katherine Palmer inspired us to include world music, encouraging simple and repetitive songs for pre-school age. Each presenter included live demonstration and application of the material. At each workshop, our Arizona chapter of ECMMA provides practical, educational and inspirational experiences for anyone associated with young children—please put these workshops on your calendar!

Author: Susan Yuen is passionate about allowing children to have rich musical experiences. Yuen has a M.M. in Piano Performance Pedagogy from Arizona State University, and a B.S. in Music Education from Maranatha Baptist University.
