I saw Artur Rubinstein play a concert when I was eight years old. It must have made an impression on me – Rubinstein is still my favorite pianist!

But all I remember is meeting my piano teacher in the audience. I didn’t know that she even existed outside the boundaries of that little room with the two spinets, the bench with the needlepoint cover, the can of multi-colored ballpoint pens with which she wrote each week’s lesson . . . Still, there she was, very tall (she must have been wearing heels!) in the red velvet jewel box of Orchestra Hall. . .

On Sunday, I gave a concert, and the best part was seeing some of my young clients in the audience. Remember Luis? He came! And for Luis, the out-of-the-box effect was magnified by the appearance of some of his other practitioners from the Lydian Center.  After the concert, he was like a little dog who doesn’t know who to run to first.

“Eve! I LIKED it! Here!” He shoved a bouquet into my hand. “Gotta GO!”

I saw him again in my office the next Wednesday. He came in ready to play.

My upright piano has one of those shiny lacquers that reflect faces back. Luis uses it as a mirror. He loves to sing and gesticulate, just like the artists he watches on YouTube. He wouldn’t let me sing. “No! Just me!”
